How to Find Forgotten Investments in India

A practical checklist for finding forgotten shares, dividends and other historical investment records.

Start with your family records

Search old certificates, dividend warrants, annual reports, bank statements, demat statements, emails, letters and tax records.

Build an investment inventory

Create a list containing company name, investor name, folio, certificate number, approximate year, address and any dividend evidence you find.

Look for multiple companies

One forgotten investment can be a clue that other investments exist. However, any cross-company matching must be based on lawful data use and should be independently verified.

Be careful with unsolicited recovery offers

Never assume a person who contacts you knows your complete asset position. Ask where the information came from, whether the provider is independent, what it will charge and what documents it needs.
